Just in time for IBC 2016, our product teams are excited to announce the integration of Verizon’s Slicer application, an essential software element of the Uplynk Video Streaming service, into the Volicon Media Intelligence service.
This unique combination enables existing Volicon broadcast customers to immediately address the millennial opportunity by launching OTT offerings quickly and efficiently. As the Slicer is software based it can reside on the existing Volicon hardware installations to reduce capital outlay. Not only is installation simple, but the combination of Volicon and Slicer streamlines the production workflow for creating OTT content from live broadcasts to improve staff productivity.
The addition of the Slicer application to the Volicon Media Intelligence service adds industry-leading compliance, monitoring and OTT delivery in a single footprint within a broadcaster’s facility. With activation as easy as a flip-of-the-switch, the Slicer application gives broadcasters the ability to ingest video, encode it into multiple bitrate profiles, encrypt it and distribute it via OTT or VOD (video-on-demand) services, as well as through web and social media-sharing platforms.
For current users of the Volicon Media Intelligence service, integrating Slicer couldn’t be easier. In most cases, existing hardware already meets requirements or can easily be upgraded to handle the additional processing load when incorporating Slicer. From a user’s viewpoint, Slicer will appear as a new function labeled “Deliver” on the Media Intelligence service dashboard. As content is broadcast, Slicer will automatically capture, compress, upload, transcode and push files to Verizon’s Edgecast Content Delivery Network’s origin servers.
Through the use of cloud-based processing resources, Slicer can improve efficiency and reduce costs in two important ways. First, because Slicer uses a single workflow to reach all connected devices, encoding, storage and streaming costs are reduced. Unifying encoding for compliance, as well as monitoring OTT encoding, simplifies broadcast workflows, resulting in fewer overall encoding requirements, improved technical efficiency and fewer vendors to manage. Second, by using on-demand cloud resources for transcoding, Slicer eliminates the need to invest in large processing resources at the broadcaster’s facility that might only be used a few hours each day. Media asset management is also simplified because it uses a single workflow that works across all platforms and ensures important data like closed captioning is preserved.
However, cost is not the only factor to consider. As viewers demand broadcast quality in their online services, monitoring is a vital area that any OTT service needs to deliver. The Volicon Media Intelligence and Slicer combination is unique because it provides continuous broadcast and OTT signal monitoring, logging, sharing, reviewing and compliance on a single, easy-to-use platform.
