Search Policy

It is the publisher's responsibility to ensure that all of its properties: comply with all applicable federal, state/provincial, and local laws or regulations; do not violate the intellectual property rights of third parties; and do not mislead or deceive users into downloading software or providing personal information without the user's knowledge, under false pretenses, or to companies that resell, trade, barter or otherwise misuse that personal information. These guidelines are for illustrative purposes only and may be updated from time to time at Yahoo's discretion. Please consult your publisher agreement and other applicable policies for details.

Restricted Content

In general, publishers are restricted from displaying Yahoo paid results against the following types of content or in connection with domain names that contain references to topics including, but not limited to, the following list. Yahoo may also restrict which categories of ads may be served on publisher sites that contain restricted content.

  • Adult products, domains and sexually explicit content
  • Mature content (e.g. sex advice or medical information)
  • Hard news (including content that focuses on serious topics and events)
  • User-generated content
  • Content targeting and/or collecting information from minors

Publisher Practices

All implementations displaying Yahoo paid results must be labeled to preserve a user's search intent by clearly indicating throughout that a search is being performed on a specific keyword.

Prohibited publisher practices include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Actively encouraging, compensating or rewarding users for clicking on paid results
  • Automatically directing the user to another page from the publisher site that contains Yahoo ads
  • Changing user preferences, resetting default home pages, resizing browser windows, disabling back buttons, or otherwise interfering with a user's ability to navigate, without appropriate notice and user consent
  • Having excessive, misleading or inappropriate content on the publisher site to impact keyword selection
  • Forwarding, masking or cloaking URLs or engaging in deceptive practices
  • Using methods such as impression-generating tools, robots, click-exchange programs, autosurf or paid-to-surf programs to generate clicks

Unacceptable Content

Yahoo prohibits its paid results from appearing on sites or domain names containing or relating to certain topics and behaviors.

These topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Any product or service from countries subject to U.S. trade sanctions or embargo
  • Banned substances, such as ephedra or ma huang
  • Bulk marketing products or services if the stated or implied use of the product is unsolicited spam
  • Collection (as primary purpose) of personally identifiable information to be used for consumer or promotional marketing, or related purposes
  • Content of questionable legality (e.g. falsely obtained passwords, pyramid schemes, evading traffic tickets)
  • Controversial content (e.g. hacking/cracking, advocating or glorifying suffering and violence)
  • Copyright infringement facilitation
  • Defamatory, libelous, threatening or other material that advocates against any individual or entity
  • Distribution of viruses, malware, spyware, or other unsafe downloads
  • Fake IDs, fake diplomas, or education transcripts
  • Fireworks and explosives
  • Excessive, duplicate or competing advertisements
  • Extreme adult content
  • Hacking, surveillance, interception or descrambling equipment and techniques
  • Online gambling
  • Pay-to-click offers
  • Promotion, sale or facilitated sale of:
  • Academic paper-writing services and the sale of pre-written essays, theses and dissertations
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Body parts or bodily fluids
  • Counterfeit, fake or bootleg products, or replicas or imitations of designer products
  • Government IDs or police items
  • Hazardous substances
  • Products, services or methods of removing items from a user's credit report
  • Tobacco and tobacco-related products, including electronic cigarettes
  • Weapons of any kind, including: firearms, their integral parts and ammunition, military ordnance and grenades, knives marketed as weapons, other weapons such as metal knuckles, clubs, leaded canes, and the provision of "how-to" materials
  • Prescription, Schedule I and Schedule II drugs (Sponsored Search and Content Match implementations)
  • Prostitution and escort services
  • Recreational drugs and drug paraphernalia, including products or information related to "beating" a drug test
  • Vulgar and obscene content
